window wells

The installation of window wells are necessary when there is a negative grade around the foundation that allows rain water to run in towards a basement window allowing water intrusion through the window sill. The solution is having window wells installed with an appropriate cover or designated drain system to allow the grade around the foundation to be built up by hauling in top soil and creating a better slope away from the foundation. This not only prevents the water intrusion through the basement windows but increasing the grade against the foundation will minimize hydrostatic pressure around the foundation and further preventing major structural issues.

There are occasional instances where a well and cover may not be the best solution or a feasible discharge plan cannot be accomplished. Some will resort to eliminating the basement window all together by filling it with glass blocks or by brick and mortar. However, there is usually always a threat of water intrusion after raising the grade against the blocked in window and alternative waterproofing methods will be required on the interior of the basement and will add to the overall cost of the end solution.
