Sump Pit & Pumps
Not every basement has a sump pit and pump but it is becoming more and more common for new home builders to be installing sump pits during the original construction as a preventative measure to collect any groundwater that may present itself around the foundation and find a way to the inside. Sump pits are typically accompanied with interior drain tile that runs along the perimeter of a foundation and mitigates groundwater into the sump pit. Sump pits are absolutely necessary for an interior drain tile system to ensure the collected ground water is properly mitigated, without it, the collected ground water has no where to drain to and the system will not function as intended.
With that being said, a sump pit is useless without a sump pump to take the collected groundwater and pump it away from the structure. Ultimately, any 3/4 HP sump pump should do the trick as long as it has power and functions properly, most sump pumps will come with a manufactures warranty.
When you have a sump pump that runs off electricity, you have the threat of power outages during heavy rain fall causing your sump pump to not operate when you need it most. A primary sump pump can easily be paired with either a battery or water powered back up system to account for the power outages and keep you protected during your most vulnerable time.
The number one mistake made with installing sump pumps is that the discharge will not be ran a proper distance away from the foundation and is often dumping the collected groundwater right next to the foundation which will allow pumped groundwater to seep down the side of the foundation and be recycled through the sump pump over and over, adding unnecessary wear to your sump pump and leading you to replacement sooner than anticipated. A proper discharge route is imperative to getting the most out of your sump pump and guaranteeing the collected groundwater is being mitigated away from the foundation.
